World Food Program rushes aid to the hungry of Haiti

"It is vital that the response from the global humanitarian community matches the immense needs of the people of Haiti," Josette Sheeran, executive director of the United Nations World Food Program said Monday, Jan. 18.

Executive-Director Sheeran said the W.F.P. aims to provide the equivalent of 10 million ready-to-eat meals in the next week to people who have no access to cooking facilities or even clean water. The W.F.P. has appealed to military forces around the the world to donate 100 million ready-to-eat meals "so we can sustain this lifeline of food to the hungry in the first phase of the emergency." Later, the W.F.P. will transition to general food distribution of items such as rice, vegetable oil, dried beans and lentils. Haiti will require emergency food assistance for several months.

Ms. Sheeran said the W.F.P. is establishing four humanitarian hubs to deliver food assistance in Port-au-Prince and at least 30 other hubs at locations across Haiti. The W.F.P. has appealed for $279 million to support its relief operations in Haiti. Through Jan. 19, the W.F.P. has received more than $60 million from governments, about $6 million from the private sector and $2.5 million from individuals donating on-line.

Members of the United Nations Association of Greater Kansas City raised $627 for the W.F.P.'s Haiti mission during their annual meeting on Friday, Jan. 5.
