Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Dec. 11, 2006, visited the United Nations Peace Plaza and the Truman Presidential Library and Museum. Secretary-General Annan traveled to Independence to give his farewell address. He retired from office on Dec. 31 and was succeeded by Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. Accompanying Mr. Annan to the Peace Plaza and the Truman Library was his wife, Nane. Jim Everett escorted Mr. and Mrs. Annan on the site of the Peace Plaza, explaining the history of the monument, which is dedicated to U.N. Peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
